Game description
Metroid Dread NSP is an action game released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. It has sold over 3 million copies worldwide, making it the most successful game in the series. Metroid Dread won the “Best Adventure Game” award at The Game Awards 2021, becoming the only Switch game to do so.
It is undoubtedly one of the best-looking Switch games I’ve played. Many would agree. The game’s graphics are truly impressive for a portable console like the Switch. While it can’t be compared to other AAA PC or PS4 games, it boasts a superb visual foundation. From the tree and lighting effects to the depth of the environments and the cinematic cutscenes between gameplay sequences, the graphics are simply stunning. The game also skillfully creates a cold and gloomy atmosphere with its terrifying monsters. The game’s characters are incredibly detailed. Despite being based on a 2.5D perspective, they appear deep and rich in detail. Furthermore, Metroid Fusion guarantees smooth gameplay at 60 frames per second.
Story
It takes place immediately after the events of Metroid Fusion. For those unfamiliar with the previous games, the opening scene provides a brief overview of the events of Metroid Fusion. At the beginning of the game, our beautiful and heavily armored heroine, Samus Aran, travels to the planet ZDR to investigate the mysterious X-parasite. This remote planet has been plunged into chaos due to the proliferation of vicious alien creatures and robots (known as E.M.M.I.s). These creatures are programmed to hunt and destroy the planet.
Unfortunately, during her investigation, Samus becomes infected with a parasite and undergoes treatment with Metroid cells. Although the parasites are removed from her body, traces of them remain in her suit. These creatures, having learned all of Samus’s abilities, created a perfect copy of her called the “SA-X.” This is one of the most dangerous enemies Samus will face in the game.
Gameplay
In terms of gameplay, it retains the core of the series: a side-scrolling shooter with 2D and 1/2D graphics. However, in certain scenes (such as defeating bosses or unlocking a new ability), the game suddenly switches to a 3D perspective with cinematic camera angles. This is one of the differences from other games in the series.
The combat mechanics in Metroid Dread are very flexible and well-designed. You’ll learn to run, jump, navigate tight spaces, counterattack, and attack enemies with a variety of unique weapons. Blocking attacks is one of the game’s best mechanics, giving Metroid Dread its unique character. It’s best to use blocks at the right moment to deflect enemy attacks and counterattack. During boss battles, you’ll also have to defend against some of their attacks, so players need to be careful and time their counterattacks correctly.
The developers put their heart and soul into creating Metroid Dread’s map system. At first glance, it looks like a complex maze full of twists, turns, and obstacles. However, all the locations on the map are tightly connected, making it virtually impossible to get lost.
