Born of Bread NSP is an action-adventure platform game featuring paper-inspired art, an interactive combat system, and a humorous adventure story. The yearning for a Paper Mario-like experience is so strong among players that even Nintendo struggled to recapture that magic in recent games like Sticker Star, Color Splash, and Origami King. In a surprising move, Nintendo announced a remake of The Thousand Year Door in 2024. However, the quest for that elusive magic continues with Born of Bread.

Despite its jokingly “yeastpunk” label, Born of Bread is a 2.5D role-playing adventure game that clearly captures the essence of Paper Mario. Players take on the role of Loaf, a sentient loaf of bread brought to life by his baker father. The story begins with a race against time to prevent the collection of Sun Stones—mysterious spells of catastrophic power—along with a stolen castle, a wrongly accused baker father, and a quest involving an ancient civilization. The combat system relies on using a frying pan to smash everything in sight and frantically jumping around. Interestingly, it turns out the Mario character was initially just a prototype during the world design phase. Born of Bread is built upon its world, combat system, and story. The game world features meticulously crafted levels filled with secrets and paths, sometimes feeling overdone and time-consuming. The level system, focusing on specific stats, encourages creative character development by hunting hidden lizards.

However, changes in gameplay style and the introduction of sympathetic villains with deep backstories create an incongruous mix of quirky gameplay mechanics and emotional depth. This inconsistency can leave players undecided about who they’re rooting for. In short, Born of Bread incorporates elements of Paper Mario, but doesn’t quite reach the same level of satisfaction and feels somewhat incomplete.
