Little Nightmares is a fantastic game at first glance. Similar to Playdead’s outstanding games Limbo and Inside, it’s a puzzle-platform game with a dark style. Players take on the role of Six, a nine-year-old girl who must navigate the ocean waves from the depths of a giant ship called The Mow. Originally announced in 2014 as Hunger by Swedish studio Tarsier, Little Nightmares unexpectedly exhibits an insatiable appetite that changes personality. In short, she’s not an innocent girl; at times she displays traits that fit the game’s cast of villains. Establishing a strong, empathetic connection with Little Nightmares’ protagonist doesn’t guarantee anything; it deprives the game of the suspense it should have – the life-or-death chases, the hide-and-seek games, and the desperate attempts to escape the clutches of weak, armed attackers.

The DLC includes one of the game’s best monsters: a gigantic aquatic creature reminiscent of Inside’s terrifying, long-haired underwater monsters. However, Little Nightmares falls short when compared to Playdead’s work, leaving one wondering how much better the game would be if the controls were more responsive and the buffering between bugs were faster. Little Nightmares boasts excellent character and environmental design and outstanding sound effects; parts of Maw scream like a giant, robotic sailor ship.
