Fortnite NSP is an Action-Strategy game offers a battle royale mode, shooting, and online multiplayer. The game lacks the original Fortnite mode, now known as “Save the World” (where players build and defend bases from zombies), and it’s unclear whether this mode will be available for Nintendo Switch players. The Xbox One version is still labeled as “beta,” and the Switch version doesn’t have this feature, likely making it the best available. However, the announcement of a new battle royale mode, which appeared in the first week of the game’s launch, is encouraging.

It is essentially a battle royale game, and perhaps the first of its kind on Nintendo consoles. While the concept is simple, it’s full of complex tactics and details. Up to 100 players drop onto an island in a Battle Bus—an airborne vehicle—and then jump anywhere on the island to loot weapons, health packs, and tactical gear (my personal favorite: cloaking, which makes you look like a bush). They then attempt to eliminate all other players to be the last one standing. Meanwhile, an approaching storm constricts the battlefield, creating an additional layer of threat and further reducing the space available to the remaining players.

Finally, Nintendo fans can see for themselves why this is so exciting: the game is genuinely engaging. With its free-to-play model, Epic Games demonstrates an extraordinary ability to engage players. While costumes, dances, and much more are offered as paid content, they are arguably good enough to justify the higher price, as they provide a significant amount of core content from the start. Long story short: after LA Noire, Doom, Rocket League, and Skyrim, the Switch has proven it can handle large-scale multi-platform games, and that’s fantastic for Nintendo.
