Looking back, it’s fascinating to see how the Resident Evil NSP series has evolved over the years. Even today, it generally falls into two distinct play styles. There are the older, puzzle-focused games stretching from Resident Evil 1 to Code Veronica, and then the over-the-shoulder, third-person shooters that make up almost everything the company has produced since, with the exception of Resident Evil 7.

The classic style has become quite popular recently, thanks to the remastered version of Resident Evil 2 and the more recent Resident Evil 3 remake. Today, we’ll be looking at a remastered version released almost twenty years ago, in 2002. The plot of Resident Evil, or “the remaster” as fans prefer to call it, is identical to the original PS1 game. Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield are members of the special forces unit “STARS” in the Raccoon City Police Department. Sent into the surrounding forests and mountains to investigate murders, they are attacked by mutants and find refuge in a nearby mansion.

Soon separated from the rest of the team, the pair must find a way to survive in the zombie-infested mansion. The story of the original Resident Evil game is an integral part of the survival horror genre and has rightfully earned that status, especially in this remastered version which corrects many of the translation errors in the original game, as well as adding a lot of new information and details.

As for the gameplay, it has remained largely unchanged. It’s a third-person survival game where you shoot enemies, but unlike newer Resident Evil games, this game focuses more on puzzle-solving and inventory management rather than constant combat. In this game, and in many of the earlier games in the series, you will have limited access to all the places you need, so you will spend most of your time exploring different rooms, finding items, and trying to figure out where each item is and what you need to move to the next area.
