The divine King of the universe, after demonstrating his skill at manipulating objects with a powerful scroll, hurled it into the night sky, once again destroying the celestial bodies above. His son, the Prince, and his cousins ​​are tasked with going to Earth and creating stars and planets to repopulate the sky by rolling everything up. This might not make sense if you haven’t played KATAMARI (or even if you have), but the idea has been incredibly successful, leading to truly hilarious situations like Bowser kidnapping Princess Peach.

The King, a boastful, arrogant, and all-powerful god, is generally kind-hearted, but he likes to wear very tight pants and is loved by everyone despite his condescending attitude towards the Prince and his comically quirky cousins. Thanks to his masterful use of every word in dialogue, I laughed at least once every time he contemplated the nature of the universe or boasted about himself in his distinctive voice. Once Upon A KATAMARI is a brilliant example of comic book writing and translation, masterfully using humor to set the stage for the objective of each level before the game even begins, and never compromising on jokes.

The game’s core idea revolves around time travel, taking you to various locations from Edo-era Japan to the American West and the age of dinosaurs. This gives each level its own unique character. Each level begins with a specific task: fulfilling a request in the name of the king. Some of these tasks are relatively simple, such as rolling a KATAMARI of a certain size within a specific time. Others involve rolling specific items, such as the level where you have to roll drinks across the American West desert.
