Game description
Arsene Lupin – Once A Thief NSP XCI is an adventure puzzle game that’s better than ever; it’s more logical and understandable. It’s essential for setting new goals, and the quest log is clearer and more helpful when you’re stuck. Most puzzle clues require you to consult your inventory or notes before you can proceed (sometimes you have to search pixel by pixel). Only two puzzles seemed challenging to me; the final puzzle, for better or worse, reminded me of something from Myst or The 7th Guest. Besides the heist-planning mechanics (which, sadly, we never see in real life),
there’s also something reminiscent of Frogwares’ Sherlock Holmes games: you carefully observe someone and analyze subtle clues to figure out what they’re hiding, and what exactly. Hercule Poirot: The First Cases’ dialogue-driven gameplay requires you to solve multiple versions of these puzzles throughout the game. While my understanding improved as the story progressed, I must admit that the puzzles initially seemed rather confusing and took several attempts to solve. These puzzles always have a correct sequence.
The game mitigates this issue by offering hints after three incorrect attempts, but this only exacerbates the flaws. In contrast, individual puzzles that require independent solution present a more engaging challenge. Sometimes I got stuck, only to later discover the necessary elements were already there; I simply needed to think more creatively. These moments were enjoyable, and the game could have offered more of them. Additional challenges include event-ordering tasks, where players must arrange events in the correct order.
