Determining the scope of changes for a reboot has always been a difficult task, especially for the popular Pokémon series. Too many changes can alienate players; a prime example is the simplified versions of the original Pokémon Red and Blue games: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! for the Nintendo Switch.

However, a combination of elements developed over the years can result in some of the best games in the series, as exemplified by HeartGold and SoulSilver for the DS. Pokémon Diamond and Pearl falls somewhere in the middle; it offers a great opportunity to expand the Sinnoh Pokémon collection, which was lacking in the main Sword and Shield games, and ultimately delivers an unforgettable adventure.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl uses a chibi 3D art style in the game world; as a result, all the characters look like lifeless Funko Pop! figures, which is a serious drawback. The battles were certainly top-notch, with impressive stages and fantastic backdrops for Pokémon battles, but the game world itself feels low-quality in comparison. Furthermore, this completely ruins the characterization of some NPCs, who were intimidating and serious in the original 2D games. Why take this giant enemy seriously when it looks just as dangerous (and harmless) as the other trainers?

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Remastered:

Every Pokémon you encounter has a life-size model reminiscent of Sword and Shield, and it looks much better than the chibi models that dominated the game world. This makes us wish they’d retained the scale of the game world from previous Nintendo Switch games, instead of transforming the original 2D graphics into a fully 3D world.

The Good Old Days:

To the disappointment of the series’ creators, Pokémon no longer appear in the open world; instead, we return to random encounters in the tall grass while exploring the Sinnoh trails. We had hoped to completely eliminate this old system, but unfortunately, that was not to be. The area where Pokémon do appear in the game world is an entirely new zone called the Great Nether. The Great Nether is a reworked version of the system from the original games, where players can explore the world, craft crystals, and meet other players.

• Both NSP and XCI formats work perfectly with Yuzu and Ryujinx emulators. NSP files are installed directly, while XCI files are full cartridge dumps.
• On a modded Nintendo Switch, use Tinfoil or Goldleaf to install NSP files directly to your console.
