While we wait for news about the Switch 2, the original Nintendo Switch is still on the market. Nintendo proved this with a surprise live stream: a new Mario & Luigi RPG game. Following Mario & Luigi RPG: Paper Jam, released for the 3DS in 2015, Mario & Luigi RPG: Brotherhood ROM is the first game in this beloved brotherhood RPG series. More importantly, it’s the first game from the creators of the series to emerge in 2019 after the unfortunate demise of AlphaDream. Luckily, I had the opportunity to try it out for about 90 minutes at a special event, and the game felt like another masterpiece showcasing the best graphics and gameplay on the Switch.

The long-awaited return:

All of this was great, but what really captivated me was the combat system in the demo version. As I mentioned before, it works similarly to previous Mario RPG games. Evasion and attack timing are crucial. Depending on the enemy’s personality, the brothers’ jumps and punches are very effective. Different attacking brothers require different button combinations to maximize their attack power. Thanks to its stunning visual style, all battles are engaging and rewarding; the game’s cover looks like a 3D version of the Mario & Luigi series’ graphics and instruction manual. Seeing Mario and Luigi swinging their hammers was like going back to a Saturday morning cartoon – absolutely delightful.

Lately, a new Mario & Luigi game caught my attention:

Brotherhood, which rewards with experience points, a must-have element in any good RPG game. The game also seems to offer various customization options thanks to its simple leveling system where players can choose to permanently level up after reaching certain levels (though reports suggest not all level increases work). Unfortunately, I don’t have much to say after playing the demo, but that’s okay. Maybe I’ll try out some other great RPG games I played this year. Mario & Luigi: Brotherhood is releasing on November 7th exclusively for Nintendo Switch. Great review! I’m really looking forward to this game because I hate waiting for new content. Meanwhile, The Legend of Zelda: Magic looks awful and costs $60. This Smurfs game is no exception.
