It feels incredibly powerful that Cassette Beasts, a game that combines monster battling and creature collecting, has finally arrived on the Nintendo Switch. You’ll find a mix of primarily new ideas that go far beyond these basic elements, exploring a world full of charming and wondrous creatures, battling and capturing them (or, in this case, “rescuing”), and facing off against a series of increasingly challenging “trainers.”

After creating your little character, you wake up on the shores of an island called New Wirral. The story of Cassette Beasts begins in a rather unusual way: you find yourself cut off from the real world on an island filled with monsters you can transform into by recording them on cassette tapes and inserting them into cassette players. At first, it seems there’s no way back, but with the help of a young woman named Kylie, you discover that defeating a group of strange creatures called Great Angels may offer a way out. These angels are unlike the other monsters they’ve gathered, taking on forms that are more terrifying than harmless.

The game begins with your sudden arrival on New Wirral, a mysterious island from Arthurian legend, where you’ve broken free from the constraints of a particular version of time and reality. The inhabitants of New Wirral come from different eras and versions of Earth; the first arrived on its shores nearly a century before the events of the current game. They soon discover that they are not the only living beings on the island, as dozens of different monsters roam its lands.

• Both NSP and XCI formats work perfectly with Yuzu and Ryujinx emulators. NSP files are installed directly, while XCI files are full cartridge dumps.
