Xenoblade Chronicles 3 NSP is fighting for the title of best role-playing game on the Nintendo Switch. All the main games in the series are available on the console in their best-of-the-line form, with rich downloadable content and hundreds of hours of gameplay. It’s ideally positioned to attract a wider audience and break out of its current limited niche. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Switch NSP looks like Monolith Soft and Nintendo’s best attempt yet to win this battle. While I’ve only seen a small part of the world of Aionios so far (around ten hours), it seems like a game aiming to appeal to a wider audience without sacrificing what makes the series so special.

It progresses slowly, but it’s worth the time, as mastering each element reveals the brilliance of the unique combat system. Most players familiar with previous games will be familiar with many of the elements, but the character matchmaking feature is entirely new. It transforms two team members into a massive, Power Rangers-like entity with more powerful attacks than normal. This is an element I’m not entirely sure about yet, as it seems to disrupt the flow of combat. However, I’ve only played a few hours, so no one knows how it will evolve. I’ll address this in more detail in my full review, but for now, it feels like a strange addition to the combat system.
