In short: Yo-kai Watch 1 NSP is very similar to Pokémon. However, rather than directly imitate one of Nintendo’s most popular series, developer Level-5 aimed to create something more unique and innovative than what Pokémon had offered years ago. The result is a captivating RPG with some great moments and some less exciting ones, but it succeeds thanks to its immersive world full of charming and funny characters and an unwavering commitment to its own style.

If you’re unfamiliar with them, yokai are spirit-like creatures that influence and cause trouble for ordinary people. You know those Pokémon that get away with anything despite their strange appearance? (Mr. Mime, NosePass, and Clifkey are good examples.) So, here are yokai. They’re hilarious! They take on the characteristics of animals, people, and inanimate objects; with quirky names like Snotsulong (a bird with a snot-like trickle from its nostril) and Timidwil (a small, devilish imp trembling with anxiety), it’s hard not to enjoy their absurdity. Level-5 embraces this strangeness, and the result is a wealth of humor, personality, and charm.

You play as an elementary school boy or girl who can see and communicate with yokai thanks to the power of their yokai watch. After befriending Whisper, a yokai resembling a traditional ghost, you set out to stop other yokai from plaguing the town. For much of the game, you feel like you’re simply jumping from one problem to the next without a central conflict or end goal. While the town offers plenty of amusing stories, there’s a noticeable lack of a main plot and a central villain. Fortunately, Springdale is a great place to wander and explore.

• Both NSP and XCI formats work perfectly with Yuzu and Ryujinx emulators. NSP files are installed directly, while XCI files are full cartridge dumps.
• On a modded Nintendo Switch, use Tinfoil or Goldleaf to install NSP files directly to your console.
